Shechem

Shechem is a City of Refuge and a City of Leviim in the territory of Ephraim, between Mount Grizim and Mount Eival.

Currently identified with Tel Balata (Y. Aharoni).

Yaakov bought Shechem as a family land portion from the sons of Hamor (Genesis 33, 19).
Yosef's bones were buried in Shechem (Joshua 24, 32).
Gideon's ambitious son, Avimelekh, lived and ruled in Shechem (Judges 8, 31- Judges 9, 57).
Rehavam was to be crowned as king in Shechem (I Kings 12, 1; II Chronicles 10, 1).
Yerovam built up Shechem as his first capital city (I Kings 12, 25).
