Dan (Laish) is the capital city of the tribe of Dan, which was called Laish or Leshem before the Danites conquered it.
Currently identified with Tel el-Kaadi, which is Tel Dan (Y. Aharoni).
- Avraham pursued the four kings until Dan after they had taken Lot captive (Genesis 14, 14).
- From the top of Mount Nevo, Moshe saw Dan as the northern border of the Land of Israel (Deuteronomy 34, 1).
- Dan (Laish) was conquered by men of the tribe of Dan (Joshua 19, 47; Judges 18, 29).
- During the monarchic period, Dan marked the northern border of the Kingdom of Yisrael (I Samuel 3, 20; II Samuel 3, 20; II Samuel 17, 11; II Samuel 24, 2; II Samuel 24, 15; I Kings 5, 5; I Chronicles 1, 21; II Chronicles 30, 5).
- Yerovam set up one of the golden calves at Dan and turned it into a center for foreign worship (avoda zara) which continued even in the days of Yehu (I Kings 12, 29-30; II Kings 10, 29; Amos 8, 14).
- Ben Haddad of Damascus conquered Dan during the days of King Baasha of Yisrael, following an invitation from King Asa of Yehuda (I Kings 15, 20; II Chronicles 16, 4).
