Hormah

Hormah, formerly called Tzfat, is a city in the tribal territory of Shimon

Currently identified with Tel Masos, or Hirbet el-Meshash (Y. Aharoni).

  • When the "ma'apilim" insisted on ascending to the Land of Israel while Moshe and the Ark remained in the camp in the aftermath of the Sin of the Spies, they were routed all the way to Hormah (Numbers, 14, 45; Deuteronomy 1, 44).
  • Bnei Yisrael conquered Hormah from the Canaanites after the King of Arad took captives from Bnei Yisrael during the journey in the wilderness (Numbers 21, 3).
  • Hormah was mentioned among  the list of Yehoshua's conquests (Joshua 12, 14).
  • The Book of Shoftim describes the tribes of Yehuda and Shimon as having conquered Hormah (Judges 1, 17).
  • Hormah was one of the cities to which David sent portions of the spoils taken from the Amalekites (I Samuel 30, 30).
