Heshbon was the capital city of the Emorite King Sihon (Numbers 21, 26).
Currently identified with Hesban, north of Meidva (Aharoni).
- Sihon set out from Heshbon and captured land from Moab that extended to Arnon (Numbers 21, 28-30).
- Moshe captured Heshbon from Sihon when Sihon attacked Bnei Yisrael and Bnei Yisrael summarily conquered his kingdom (Numbers 21, 21-25).
- Men of Reuben and Gad requested of Moshe and Elazar that they be granted Heshbon, along with the other cities of Sihon, as a tribal portion; their request was ultimately granted (Numbers 32, 3; Numbers 32, 36).
- Heshbon is listed as being part of the tribal lands of Gad in the lists of the Levite cities (Joshua 21, 36-37; I Chronicles 6, 65-66).
- Apparently, King Mesha of Moab conquered Heshbon, and the prophets Yeshayahu and Yirmiahu prophesied about Heshbon's destruction (Isaiah 15, 4; Isaiah 16, 8-9ף Jeremiah 48, 1-46).
