Beit Shemesh (Yehuda) | אתר התנ"ך

Beit Shemesh (Yehuda) is a city of the Kohanim in the foothills of Yehuda, within the territory of the tribe of Dan. it is also referred to as Ein Shemesh (Joshua 19, 41).

Currently identified as Tel Rumela, adjacent to the Arab village of Ein Shams (E. Robinson, B. Mazar).

During the settlement and conquest period, Beit Shemesh lay on the border between the tribal territories of Yehuda and Dan (Joshua 15, 10; Joshua 19, 41).
In the time of the book of Samuel, Beit Shemesh was on the border between Yehuda and the Philistines. After capturing the Ark of the Covenant and keeping it for months, the Philistines returned the ark to the Israelites by sending it to Beit Shemesh (I Samuel 6, 9-20).
Beit Shemesh was one of the cities of Ben Deker, one of the district officials of King Shlomo (I Kings 4,9).
Amatzya, King of Yehuda, was defeated in Beit Shemesh at the hands of Yehoash, King of Israel (II Kings 14, 11-13).
Beit Shemesh was conquered by the Philistines during the reign of Ahaz, King of Yehuda (II Chronicles 28, 18).
